Now we have completed (although still in the process of publishing) the majority of the task-based surveys for Better Connected 2015-16, some key implications of the changes we have made are starting to emerge.

Better connected has just released 2015 results data for non-subscribing councils. This means all UK councils can use this site to see the overall star ranking for their website, as well as whether they passed or failed on individual tasks like ‘Apply for council tax reduction’, as well as how their sites performed on access from mobiles, usability and accessibility.

We published the first ‘new Better connected’ survey – pay parking fine – at the end of November. The survey covers London boroughs and metropolitan districts, a total of 89 councils representing around a fifth of all those we survey through the Better connected programme.

Generally, council websites handle the task ‘pay parking fine’ well, with nearly 70% of councils tested – London boroughs and metropolitan districts - achieving 3 or 4 stars. This is similar to the 72% that achieved the Better connected ‘standard’ (equivalent to 3 or 4 stars), when the task was last tested in 2013.

First Better connected report 2015/16 about to be published

We’re getting a bit excited (and nervous) about publishing the first ‘new Better connected’ report, which will also be the first ever to be launched on this online platform. ‘New’ Better connected - as those who have been following the story will know – is bringing some pretty significant changes to the way we present the findings of our research into the quality of council websites and related digital activity.

Dan Jellinek – A Tribute

The Better connected team was devastated to learn of the death of Dan Jellinek, on Sunday 18 October, after a totally unexpected stroke at the age of just 47. Dan had been a long-standing and much valued member of Socitm’s Better connected team.

Better connected changes from September 2015: star ranking for service areas online

Better connected’s methodology for assessing council websites is based on a structured questionnaire that tests ‘top tasks’ (eg ‘report a faulty street light’,‘object to a planning application’ or ‘find out how to vote’) as well as the performance of usability factors like navigation, search engine and accessibility.
